On August 19, 1779, Major Light Horse Harry Lee and his tired, wet troops crossed the Warren Street ditch, forded the high tide surrounding the piece of land that at high tide was the island of Paulus Hook and with bayonets alone attacked the British-held fort where Paulus Hook Park is now located.

The Historic Paulus Hook Association commemorates this unlikely win that came at a time during the Revolutionary War when the Patriots were feeling deflated. Forts in NY and Connecticut had been secured by British forces and Patriot troops were not feeling much like they were winning. While the Battle of Paulus Hook wasn't a huge battle, it was an important victory that helped turn the tide.

We invite you to join Mayor Fulop, Council President Joyce Watterman, Councilman James Solomon and Councilman Frank E. Gilmore in a march with fife and drum up Washington Street to the obelisk corner of Paulus Hook Park, where funnyman Phil Rivo will recount the story of the Battle of Paulus Hook.
