Sixth Street Embankment
The Harsimus Stem Embankment--commonly known as the Sixth Street Embankment or, simply, the Embankment--is a former elevated railway running parallel to six blocks of Sixth Street in downtown Jersey City. A towering segmented stone structure, the Embankment borders two historic districts, Harsimus Cove and Hamilton Park. The Embankment is a Jersey City Municipal Landmark and it is listed on the New Jersey State Register of Historic Places. The Embankment is eligible for the National Register of Historic Places.
The Embankment Preservation Coalition formed in 1998 to preserve the Embankment and develop it into open space. Jersey City Landmarks Conservancy endorses and supports the Coalition and its efforts.
